Backpacking routes through Asia cross borders every few days, which is exactly the shape of trip regional eSIMs are sold for. They are also two to three times more expensive per gigabyte than buying per country — so the question is not whether they are convenient but where the crossover point sits. Here is the arithmetic on both of our Asia plans, and the one country you can only reach through the larger one.

The three-country plan also comes as 3 GB for $6.90, 5 GB for $8.90 and 20 GB for $25.90. The twelve-country plan runs 3 GB for $12.90, 5 GB for $18.00 and 20 GB for $53.20.
The break-even, honestly
For the classic Singapore–Malaysia–Thailand run
Three single-country 10 GB plans cost about $29.70 and give you 30 GB. The regional plan costs $15.90 and gives you 10 GB. So if 10 GB covers your whole trip — and for three weeks of maps, Grab and messaging it usually does — the regional plan is about half the price and saves you installing three profiles. If you are a heavy user who needs 20 GB or more, buy per country.
For the twelve-country plan
At $3.05 a gigabyte this is the most expensive per-gigabyte product we sell, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It earns its price in exactly three situations: a genuinely wide route across four or more of its countries; a trip whose itinerary is not decided; or a trip that includes Taiwan.
Taiwan is only available through the 12-country plan
We do not sell a standalone Taiwan eSIM — Taiwan is not in our single-country catalogue. The Asia 12-country plan is the only way to buy Taiwanese data from us. If Taiwan is on your route, that decides it regardless of the per-gigabyte maths.
What the twelve-country plan covers

That list is worth reading twice, because it includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao on one profile — three separate telecom territories that normally need three plans — and it puts Japan and South Korea alongside the Southeast Asian countries, which most regional plans do not.
Where you get 5G on these plans
On the three-country plan, Malaysia and Thailand have 5G partner networks; Singapore is 4G on this particular agreement, which in a country that small is not something you will notice. On the twelve-country plan, nine of the twelve have a 5G partner; Cambodia, Hong Kong and Singapore run at 4G. We list them so you are not surprised, not because it will change your trip.
Both plans exit the internet in Hong Kong
Your phone attaches to a local mast in whichever country you are in, but your traffic reaches the public internet through a gateway in Hong Kong. Practically, websites see a Hong Kong address wherever you are, national streaming services may object, and latency is a little higher than a local SIM.
There is one interesting consequence for the twelve-country plan. It covers mainland China, and a Hong Kong exit sits outside the mainland filtering regime — which is the architectural reason travellers report services working on a travel eSIM that do not work on a local Chinese SIM. Two caveats we will not skip: we have not run a dated test of specific services ourselves, and our supplier warns that a Hong Kong address can trigger different geo-blocks of its own on some platforms. Practical notes for a long Asia trip
Border crossings need nothing. The same profile re-registers on the next country’s network automatically — no reinstalling, no new QR code.
Overland borders can be slow to switch. Coming into Thailand from Malaysia by train or bus, give the phone a few minutes, and toggle airplane mode once if it sulks. This is normal roaming behaviour rather than a fault.
