You can, and it is cheap. What it costs you is the queue after a long-haul arrival, your passport handed across a counter — Malaysia requires ID registration for every prepaid SIM — and your own number switched off for the trip. It also cannot be arranged before you travel, which is the part that matters when your first Grab is booked from the arrivals hall.
Roaming on your home plan is the expensive option: the major US and European carriers charge in the region of $10–12 per day, per line for Malaysia where they offer a day pass at all, and per-megabyte pricing where they do not.

There is a 50 GB / 180-day option at $56.90 for repeat visits across a season, and a Malaysia Unlimited plan at $5.26 for one day, $34.58 for a week (about $4.94 a day) or $125.15 for 30 days — $4.17 a day.
For most trips the package wins clearly: two weeks of maps, Grab, messaging and photos rarely passes 10 GB, and 10 GB costs $9.90 against $69 for the same period on unlimited.
Two things about the Unlimited plan, stated openly
Fair use is 5 GB per day at full speed — a genuinely generous daily bucket that most travellers never reach — after which the line runs at 384 Kbps until the next day. That is a harder step-down than our European plans, which fall back to 512 Kbps. And the plan is data only: it does not send or receive SMS. Keep your home SIM switched on for text messages and one-time bank codes; WhatsApp and iMessage keep working over data with your normal number.
Which networks you actually connect to
The Malaysia eSIM roams on Maxis (5G) and CelcomDigi (5G) — the country’s two largest networks after the CelcomDigi merger — and picks whichever signal is stronger. Between them they cover essentially all of Peninsular Malaysia’s populated areas.

The honest caveat: your internet exits in Singapore
Like most travel eSIMs, this one is home-routed: your phone attaches to a Malaysian mast, but your traffic reaches the public internet through a gateway in Singapore. Websites see a Singaporean address, so Malaysian geo-locked services and some domestic banking portals may object, and latency is slightly higher than a local SIM — though Singapore is close enough that you will not notice on a video call. Maps, messaging, browsing and streaming are unaffected.
