Buying one eSIM and hotspotting everyone else is the obvious way to save money on a family trip, and for a lot of families it is genuinely the right answer. For others it fails on the first afternoon, for a reason that has nothing to do with data. Here is the honest split, the arithmetic on both options, and the four practical things that decide it.
The rule that decides it
Sharing works when you stay together. It fails the moment you split up — and on a family holiday you split up more than you think: one parent takes the小 kids back to the hotel, a teenager goes to a different shop, someone walks to the pharmacy. The hotspot is a ten-metre bubble, and everyone outside it is offline in a foreign country.
What sharing actually gives you

The striking thing is how small the gaps are. Going from one shared plan to two costs ninety cents. Giving four people their own plan costs $2.70 more than sharing one. At those numbers, the decision is not really about money — it is about whether being separated and offline would ruin an afternoon. For most families with teenagers, it would.
The one thing you cannot do
You cannot install the same eSIM on two phones. A QR code provisions one profile onto one device, full stop — that is how the technology works, not a policy we chose. If two people need their own connection, that means two plans.
Four practical things that decide it
1. Do the children have eSIM-capable phones?

2. Who is the hotspot?
Pick the phone with the biggest battery and the least other work to do — not the one navigating. Give that person the power bank. If you are driving, the hotspot should not be the phone mounted on the windscreen running maps.
3. Are you splitting up on purpose?
Theme parks, ski days, shopping streets and airports are where families separate, and they are also where being offline hurts most. If your itinerary includes any of those, buy the second plan. It is a dollar.
4. Set it all up at home
Install every eSIM on every phone before you fly, on your own Wi-Fi, and leave the lines switched off. Doing four phones in an arrivals hall with tired children is the worst version of this. Plans do not start until first connection at the destination, so there is no cost to being early.
Groups, not families
For friends travelling together the calculation changes, because adults separate constantly and nobody wants to ask permission to leave. Our honest advice for a group of adults is one plan each — at $8.90 for 10 GB it is less than a round of coffees, and it removes an entire category of friction.
