If your contract is with a carrier in an EU or EEA country, “roam like at home” already covers Hungary at no surcharge, subject to your operator’s fair-use policy — you probably do not need to buy anything. This guide is for travellers from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Brazil and everywhere else the rule does not reach, and for long-stay visitors whose home allowance runs out in week two.

A 50 GB / 180-day plan at $44.90 covers repeat visits. Hungary Unlimited runs from $4.30 for one day and $28.31 for a week (about $4.04 a day) to $91.63 for 30 days — $3.05 a day.
The fair-use number, stated openly
Hungary Unlimited allows 5 GB per day at full speed, then continues at 512 Kbps until the next day resets. Five gigabytes is a heavy travel day — maps, messaging, social media and a few videos rarely come close. At the reduced speed maps, messaging, tickets and email still work; HD video does not.
Which networks you actually connect to
The Hungary eSIM roams on Vodafone (5G) and Telenor Hungary (5G) — two of the country’s three national networks — choosing whichever is stronger. Magyar Telekom is not part of this agreement.
Coverage is strong across Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Győr, and reliable around Lake Balaton, through the Danube Bend and in the Tokaj and Eger wine regions. Budapest’s metro has coverage on the platforms and in most tunnels. Realistic gaps are limited to some of the Great Plain back roads and the deeper Bükk and Mátra forest.
Three ways Budapest takes money off visitors — and how data stops all three
1. Street taxis. Use Bolt or the official Főtaxi app. Hailing on the street near tourist areas is where the stories come from; an app fixes the price before you get in.
2. Exchange booths. Hungary uses the forint, and the booths near the Chain Bridge and Váci utca advertise rates that are not the rates you get. Pay by card, and withdraw from a bank ATM rather than the free-standing yellow machines.
3. The terminal question. When a card machine offers to charge you in euros or your home currency instead of forint, always decline. Pay in HUF and let your own bank convert — the terminal's rate is worse, every time.

The honest caveat: your internet exits in France or the Netherlands
Like most travel eSIMs, this one is home-routed. Your phone attaches to a Hungarian mast, but your traffic reaches the public internet through a gateway in France or the Netherlands. Getting online, step by step
