If your contract is with a carrier in an EU or EEA country, “roam like at home” already covers Sweden at no surcharge, subject to your operator’s fair-use policy — you probably do not need to buy anything. This guide is for travellers from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Brazil and everywhere else the rule does not reach, and for long-stay visitors whose home allowance runs out in week two.
Sweden is nearly cashless — plan accordingly
Many Swedish cafés, museums, buses and even some churches take no cash at all. Visitors pay by card, and a growing number of small vendors only take contactless or an app. If your phone is offline you cannot check a balance, can't get a bank one-time code and can't open a mobile ticket. Connectivity here is not a convenience, it is the payment layer.

The fair-use number, stated openly
Sweden Unlimited allows 5 GB per day at full speed, then continues at 512 Kbps until the next day resets. Five gigabytes is a heavy travel day — maps, messaging, social media and a few videos rarely come close. At the reduced speed maps, messaging, tickets and email still work; HD video does not.
Three networks — and why that matters here
The Sweden eSIM roams on Telia (5G), Telenor (5G) and 3 (5G), switching to whichever is strongest. Most of our plans ride two networks; Sweden gets all three of the main ones, which is the best coverage position in our whole catalogue.
It matters because of the shape of the country. Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö are saturated with 5G, and the southern half is comfortable on any network. The apps a Swedish trip runs on
SL for Stockholm’s metro, buses and commuter ferries — tickets live in the app and there is no paper alternative on many routes. SJ for long-distance trains, including the night train to Abisko that most northern-lights trips start with. Google Maps handles the rest. Note that BankID, the identity app Sweden runs on, is only available to residents — as a visitor you rely on ordinary cards, so keep more than one.
The honest caveat: your internet exits in France or the Netherlands
Like most travel eSIMs, this one is home-routed. Your phone attaches to a Swedish mast, but your traffic reaches the public internet through a gateway in France or the Netherlands. Websites see a French or Dutch address, so anything geo-locked to Swedish — SVT Play and some Swedish banking portals — may refuse. Latency is marginally higher than a local SIM; browsing, navigation, video calls and streaming are unaffected.
