Somewhere in your house is a drawer with a dead SIM card in it. Probably several: the one from the Bangkok arrivals hall, the Istanbul one, one or two you can no longer place. They stopped working the day you flew home, and they have sat there since, because the bin felt wrong and the recycling bin felt dishonest. Your instinct is right on both counts. The market for traditional plastic SIMs still ran to 3.5 billion units in 2025, according to the Trusted Connectivity Alliance, and essentially none of those cards can be recycled at kerbside. Here is what they are made of, where they really end up, and what to do with yours.

What a SIM card is actually made of

Take one out of the drawer and look at it. The card body is PVC — the same polymer as a bank card. That is not a guess: when SIM manufacturers announce greener cards, the switch they describe is from virgin to recycled PVC, as manufacturer IDEMIA did for one of the world's largest operators in 2024. Set into the plastic is a module: a silicon microchip die, wired to the gold-plated contact pads that form the shiny square you were told not to touch. The whole object — chip plus its credit-card carrier — weighs around 4 grams, per Thales figures published in 2022, which also put the roughly 4.5 billion cards manufactured each year at an estimated 20,000 tons of plastic and other polymers.

The industry knows all this and is shrinking the object: 45% of member-reported SIM volumes were half-size format in 2025, up from 37% a year earlier, per the Trusted Connectivity Alliance. But smaller is not recyclable. SIM maker Giesecke+Devrient, drawing on the same industry data, puts 2023's 3.8 billion shipped cards at almost 16,000 tons of material and approximately 500,000 tons of CO2.

Why the kerbside bin cannot cope

Kerbside recycling works on two conditions: one material at a time, in pieces large enough for machines to sort. A SIM card fails both. It is a laminated sandwich of PVC, silicon and gold-plated metal that municipal facilities are not set up to separate, and at four grams it is too small to survive the sorting line anyway — it falls through the screens into residue bound for landfill or incineration. So the short answer to "can you recycle SIM cards" is: not in that bin, ever. The honest route is the small-electricals stream — WEEE, in European terms — where shredding and metal recovery are designed for exactly this kind of mixed-material object.

The e-waste ledger it joins

A dead SIM is e-waste, and e-waste is having a bad decade. The UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2024 counted a record 62 million tonnes generated in 2022 — up 82% from 2010 — of which only 22.3% was documented as properly collected and recycled. The metals inside that single year's e-waste were worth US$91 billion, including US$15 billion of gold, and US$62 billion of recoverable resources simply went unaccounted for.

SIM cards belong to the least-collected corner of that mountain. The WEEE Forum calls it "invisible e-waste": small items people do not recognise as electronics at all. A UNITAR calculation commissioned by the Forum put the category at 9 billion kilograms a year — one-sixth of all e-waste worldwide — carrying US$9.5 billion in material value. The same study found 950 million kilograms of copper-bearing cables discarded in one year, enough to circle the Earth 107 times. Your drawer is a very small shareholder in that mountain, and the sorting problem above is exactly why its share stays unrecovered.

What to actually do with the drawer

1. Destroy the chip before anything else

Cut through the gold contact square with ordinary scissors. Modern SIMs hold little beyond the credentials that let your phone talk to a network, but older cards can store contacts and text messages, and a destroyed chip closes the question for the cost of one snip. Do this before any disposal route, including handing cards to a collection scheme.

2. Take them to a small-WEEE collection point

Electrical retailers, supermarkets with battery-and-gadget bins, and council recycling centres across the UK and EU accept small electricals. This is the one route where a SIM's metals stand a chance of recovery, because WEEE processing shreds and separates mixed materials at industrial scale. Take the whole drawer at once — the trip is not worth making for a single card.

3. Ask your operator about take-back — but do not assume it

The manufacturers themselves float the idea: Giesecke+Devrient describes "tasking operators to collect unused cards to return to the manufacturer, so they can be recycled and used again". We could not find a widespread, live consumer programme behind that sentence, so treat take-back as a question to ask at the counter, not a service to rely on. If your operator accepts old cards, excellent; if the staff look blank, the WEEE bin was the honest answer anyway.

4. Do not overthink four grams

If one card ends up in general waste, that is four grams of composite plastic — regrettable, not a catastrophe. The material lever is not the card already in your hand; it is the next 3.5 billion. Which brings us to the only disposal method that genuinely works: never creating the object.

The arithmetic of never creating the object

What an eSIM does not fix: the network's energy use is effectively unchanged whichever SIM technology authenticates you, and your flight is vastly larger than everything on this page — a SIM card's lifetime carbon footprint is measured in grams, so nobody should sell you an eSIM as a climate act. The industry body itself published its first common lifecycle methodologies in May 2026 and states plainly that they are not designed to compare SIM against eSIM. You will not read "eco-friendly" or "carbon neutral" anywhere on this page — only specific, checkable statements.
