Buy a travel eSIM for Japan, land in Tokyo, open a website — and it thinks you are in Hong Kong. This is not a fault, it is how nearly every travel eSIM on the market is built, and almost nobody explains it. We checked all 392 plans we sell and are publishing the whole table, including the parts that are inconvenient for us.
The one-sentence version
Your phone connects to a real mast in the country you are standing in, but your data travels back to the network that issued the eSIM and reaches the public internet there. So the signal is local and the IP address is not.
The number, before the explanation
Of the 392 plans we currently sell, 386 exit the internet outside the destination country. Six do not: our United States, Netherlands and Brazil plans (data and unlimited versions of each) break out domestically.

Those are the plans’ documented breakout regions as of 9 August 2026. They can change when a supplier re-routes traffic, which is one reason nobody likes publishing them.
Why it works this way
A travel eSIM is a roaming product. The profile on your phone belongs to a mobile operator somewhere else — that is its home network. When you use it in Japan, a Japanese operator carries the radio link and then hands your traffic back to the home network, which passes it to the internet. The industry calls this home routing, and it is the default for roaming worldwide, not something invented for travel eSIMs.
The alternative — breaking your traffic out locally in each country — requires agreements and infrastructure in every market, which is why only a handful of our plans do it, and why they tend to be the biggest markets.
What it actually changes for you
1. National streaming will usually refuse
BBC iPlayer in Britain, ARD and ZDF in Germany, RTÉ in Ireland, NRK in Norway, SVT in Sweden, Yle in Finland: all of them check your IP address, and all of them will see a foreign one. Use hotel or café Wi-Fi for those. Global services — Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Disney+ — work normally, though Netflix may show you a different country’s catalogue.
2. Your bank may ask questions
Fraud systems compare your phone’s location with your card’s. A German card being used in Berlin while the phone appears to be in France is a mild anomaly; most banks shrug. The fix is simple and free: keep your home SIM switched on for SMS one-time codes, with its data roaming off. The code arrives over the cellular network, not the internet, so the exit IP is irrelevant to it.
3. Latency is a little higher
Your packets take a longer path. For browsing, maps, messaging, streaming and video calls this is invisible. For competitive online gaming it is not — that is the one use case where a local SIM genuinely wins.
4. Occasionally it works in your favour
Our mainland China plan exits in Hong Kong, which is outside the mainland filtering regime — the architectural reason travellers report services working on a travel eSIM that do not work on a local Chinese SIM. Worth two caveats: we have not run a dated test of specific services ourselves, and our supplier warns that a Hong Kong address can trigger different geo-blocks of its own on some platforms. Treat it as a plausible advantage, not a promise.
How to check it yourself in ten seconds
Connect to the travel eSIM, turn Wi-Fi off, and open any “what is my IP” site in a browser. The country it reports is your exit region. Do it on arrival and you will know immediately which of the effects above apply to your trip — no need to trust us, or anyone else.
A fair question: why publish this at all?
Because you will find out anyway, usually at the worst moment — when a banking app blocks a payment or a broadcaster refuses to play. Every travel eSIM provider we know of works this way and most say nothing about it. We would rather you bought with the limitation in front of you than discovered it in an arrivals hall and asked for a refund.
What this does not mean
It does not mean your data is less secure — home routing is standard mobile architecture, and the same encryption applies as on any other connection. It does not mean the plan is slower in throughput terms; the fair-use allowance and the local network decide that, not the exit point. And it does not mean you are on a VPN — you cannot choose the exit region, and it is not marketed as a privacy feature.

Why does my travel eSIM show a foreign IP address?
Because it is a roaming product. Your phone uses a local mast, but your data returns to the network that issued the eSIM and reaches the internet there. This is called home routing and it is standard across the industry.
Do all travel eSIMs do this?
Nearly all. 386 of the 392 plans we sell exit outside the destination country; our US, Netherlands and Brazil plans are the exceptions. Competitors are built the same way — most simply do not publish it.
Will BBC iPlayer or my national broadcaster work?
Usually not. They geo-check your IP address and will see a foreign one. Global services like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube work normally.
Will my bank block my card?
Rarely, and it is preventable: keep your home SIM active for SMS one-time codes with its data roaming switched off. Codes arrive over cellular, so the exit IP does not affect them.
Is this a VPN?
No. You cannot choose the exit region, it is not encrypted differently from any other mobile connection, and it is not a privacy product. It is simply where the roaming architecture puts your traffic.
Does it slow my connection down?
It adds latency, not throughput limits. Browsing, maps, streaming and video calls are unaffected; online gaming is the exception.
