The fair-use number, stated openly
Malta Unlimited allows 5 GB per day at full speed, then continues at 512 Kbps until the next day resets. Five gigabytes is a heavy travel day — maps, messaging, social media and a few videos rarely come close. At the reduced speed maps, messaging, tickets and email still work; HD video does not.
Which networks you actually connect to
The Malta eSIM roams on Vodafone (5G) and GO (5G) — the island’s two main networks, both with 5G, switching to whichever is stronger.
Coverage is effectively complete on Malta itself and on Gozo: Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Mdina, Marsaxlokk, Victoria and the Gozo coast road are all solid. Comino is covered from the neighbouring islands, which is enough for the Blue Lagoon. The genuine gaps are underground — the Hypogeum, the deeper catacombs and the wartime shelters — and offshore between the islands on the smaller boat crossings.
If you dive, and many visitors do, note that the phone stays on the boat. Malta’s dive sites are its main draw after the history, and no plan changes what happens twenty metres down.
The bus network is the whole transport system, and it is an app
Malta has no rail. Tallinja, the public bus app, is how you plan and pay for everything — routes, live arrivals and tickets. Buses are frequent on the main corridors and infrequent everywhere else, so knowing whether the next one is in four minutes or forty is the difference between a good afternoon and a long wait in the sun.
Bolt and eCabs both operate and are reasonably priced by European standards. The Gozo ferry from Ċirkewwa runs frequently and takes cars; the fast ferry from Valletta is quicker for foot passengers and both have live timetables worth checking before you set off.
The honest caveat: your internet exits in France or the Netherlands
Like most travel eSIMs, this one is home-routed. Your phone attaches to a Maltese mast, but your traffic reaches the public internet through a gateway in France or the Netherlands.
